Searching for the Ancestors and Descendants of
Nicholas Paul (1748-1820) and Barbara Vass (1757-1823),
Northampton County and Northumberland County, PA

Nicholas PAUL was born on 8 July 1748. He married Anna Barbara VASS around 1775 and they had their first child, John Jacob PAUL, on 18 April 1776 in Northampton County, PA.

Barbara VASS was born in Northampton Co in 1757, the daughter of George and Margaret VASS.

Nicholas was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was a second lieutenant in the 3rd company, 5th Battalion of the Northampton Co Militia as early as 1777. He was also enlisted in the Northampton Co militia in 1784 and 1785.

After the Revolutionary War was over, Nicholas and Barbara resided in Bethleham Township, Northampton County, where Nicholas was listed as a farmer with 150 acres in the 1786 and 1788 tax rolls.

While in Northampton Co., in addition to John Jacob, they became parents of; Susanna (b 12 Oct 1777), Anna Margaret (b 18 Sept 1780), Anna Maria (b 2 Aug 1784), Joseph (b 27 July 1788), and John (b 20 Feb 1791). These children were christened at the Dryland Church, Northampton Co. In addition to the above, Nicholas and Barbara also had the following daughters: Catherine, Nancy Ann, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Christina.

In about 1799 or 1800, the PAULs moved to Northumberland County and purchased a farm in Point Township. Their farm was across a dirt road from the farm owned by James and Sarah NEWBURY. Three of the PAUL children married three of the NEWBURY children in subsequent years, and one of Nicholas and Barbara's grandsons would marry a daughter of James and Sarah.

Nicholas PAUL died on 16 April 1820 and Barbara assigned her rights to administer the estate to John PAUL and Jacob PAUL. Barbara died on 17 Nov 1823.
